<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3161/2366720057_30bd9ac14b.jpg" alt="Reel Deal Casino Gold Rush PC Game"">

Today games rely both on game play and graphics, that wasn’t so when some of the first adventure games were being developed, which were interactive stories, but in todays gaming world, both are essential for a hot game that people want to pay for and play. But the one thing that has remained the same over decades of game development… game play. It can make or break a game, in a sense it is the game, graphics are the sweetener, they make a game that is good even better, and thats it in a nut shell.

Game play is the primary concern when creating a game, graphics would be second. The game play is the game, it’s the combination of the game mechanics, the story, the environment, the characters, and much more, it’s basically the entire game besides the the graphics. Graphics just compliment a good game, they don’t make a good game.

I’m not saying graphics aren’t important, they can make a difference in how well a game sells and if people want to play it, but they can only take a game so far; graphics aren’t the foundation, they sit on top of the foundation, if you have weak game play(The foundation.) then the graphics are only going to help so much. If the game is boring to play, then the graphics aren’t going to make it not so boring. Now if you have a game with great game play, something that is enjoyable to play, then great graphics will make a huge difference.

A great example of a game with not so great graphics for todays standards, but has great game play is World of Warcraft; I think most people have heard of the game or even played it. The game uses some what old graphics compared to other games it has to compete with, but the game relies on design and game play, and actually the choice to not use cutting edge graphics and effects has actually been a plus, because it opens up the game to a wider audience who otherwise would not be able to play the game because of not having computer hardware that can handle modern graphics. People keep flocking to this game and keep playing and in some cases get addicted, because it’s a fun game to play, which is directly due to game play.

The reader should have some idea now on why game play is greater than graphics when it comes to good or great games, game play is the deciding factor if you are going to have a game worth playing or not. If game developers put all their efforts into graphics, and very little into game play then we would have a lot of boring games to choose from.
