A few days ago, I was looking over my high school yearbook and I immediately noticed my haircut. During the time the picture was taken, I remember that I felt very uneasy having a short hair that is an imperative to our school. It was just not me. But during those times I’m left with no choice. But now in college, there is a certain level of freedom that I have. I can grow my hair to whatever length I want, and I can give my opinion freely in my classes. Anyway, one of those exchanges in classes turned out to be sour between me and a classmate who resides in the same dorm I am at. He is a junior while I was a sophomore. And guess what we debated on (it was a debate class)? We debated on whether a proper haircut should be imposed in our university. He seemed to not have taken it like a man that I won the debate. He turned out to be a bully, and a violent one at that. He would leave notes outside my door, notes that would say I should be careful. Since I care for my safety I purchased Home Security Systems. I asked my roommate to setup a security camera and a door switch. The DIY Security Systems took less than an hour to put up together. My roommate has my back. If ever that senior leaves a threatening note to me again, I can use the as evidence the one I’ll get from my security system. That could be a ground of suspension or expulsion for him.

Every single day of my teaching here in a school for special children has held a gift for me, in terms of what my students reveal about themselves and their experiences.It is precisely the mix, the variety, the diversity of students that has made education in the school where I teach so enriching. We now have students from other areas, of more races, creeds, cultures, religions, languages, ages and abilities. All of them have their special needs that we have to attend to. Some have autism, some have ADHD, and so on. Given their nature, our school has put a premium on their safety and development. We have DIY Security Systems to monitor each and every action they do. Although we give them our full and undivided attention, the security system is also needed to add that extra “eye” to watch over the kids. We also use the cameras to monitor their development and for behavioral studies. The condition of the kids, for us, are not a liability in terms of what is called “learning levels.” It is the diversity and care we give them that ensure such a rich development of observations, insights and experiences in the classroom. The Home Security Systems are assistive in that regard. It allows us to review our sessions to see which areas we could still improve on. After all, at the end of the day, it is the progress of the kids which we are committed to. We want to give them the best of what we call an education for life.
